MEDIA ADVISORY
We are Watching You Rally
at El Museo del Barrio
WHAT: A demonstration to demand the East Harlem communityís participation in the search and selection of a new executive director of El Museo del Barrio.
WHEN: Thursday, Aug. 15, 7 to 8:30 p.m.
WHERE: 104th Street and Fifth Avenue, near garden gate across from el Museo del Barrio.
WHO: Community Board 11, community residents, merchants, artists, and cultural activists.
WHY: Beginning in School District 4, el Museo del Barrio educational program was created in response to the growing concerns of East Harlem Puerto Rican parents and community activists for the need to celebrate and respect the richness and diversity of the growing Puerto Rican community. Incorporation by Marta Moreno Vega as Los Amigos del Museo del Barrio created the transitional process and evolution of the concept into a cultural advocacy institution, which had never existed before. Through their tireless and selfless efforts, they created a voice and standard for Puerto Rican art and the artistic community that must be valued and respected. Thirty years later, the mission has changed, the board had no East Harlem representation, and local artist access is limited.
We demand:
Increased community representation on el Museo del Barrioís board of directors in the search for a new director.
The development of board policies for the community distribution of unwanted catalogues.
Policies to promote local Puerto Rican artists, culture, history and preservation efforts for Puerto Rican art and artifacts.
